A. Structure, Appointment, & Function of the College Curriculum Committee

    1. Structure of the College Curriculum Committee

      The College Curriculum Committee shall consist of one faculty member from each degree‐ granting unit of the College, one undergraduate and one graduate student member, the College’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs serving ex officio and the College’s Director of Student and Academic Services serving ex officio. With the Dean’s concurrence the College Curriculum Committee may appoint non‐voting advisory members.

      A quorum shall consist of a majority of voting members.

    2. Appointment to the College Curriculum Committee

      Curriculum committee faculty members may be elected or appointed. If elected, the curriculum committee of a degree‐granting unit of the College shall elect one of its members by ballot election. At least two nominations shall be on the ballot, and the nominee that receives the highest vote is elected to serve on the College Curriculum Committee. If appointed, the chair or director of a degree‐granting unit may appoint a faculty member of the unit’s curriculum committee to serve on the College Curriculum Committee. Nominations for student members will be solicited by the College Curriculum Committee from the advising offices of degree‐granting units and elected by the Curriculum Committee.

      Elected or appointed faculty members shall serve 3‐year staggered terms, which begin on September 16 of the first year and end on September 15 of the third year. The College Curriculum Committee shall establish the terms for each member such that approximately one third of the members complete their terms in a given year. When members’ terms are expiring an election or appointment for that position shall occur during the prior Spring Quarter. In the Spring Quarter, the Curriculum Committee may elect a member to serve the next year as vice‐chair and the following year as chair. A member so elected during the second year of a 3‐year term shall serve a third year as vice‐chair and a fourth year as chair. A member may serve a maximum of two full terms consecutively except that a one‐year extension shall be provided to allow service as committee chair. Student members may serve 1 or 2 year terms as their schedules allow, and the current and incoming student representatives’ terms will overlap by at least one month when possible.

      Elected or appointed faculty members and student members are voting members. Ex officio members are non‐voting.

    3. Function of the College Curriculum Committee

      The College Curriculum Committee shall:

      • review and make recommendations to the Dean regarding new undergraduate and / graduate courses, changes to undergraduate and graduate courses, changes in undergraduate admission and program requirements, new undergraduate majors, minors, and degree programs, and new graduate programs or changes to existing graduate programs;
      • make recommendations to the Dean regarding curricular policy matters at the college level, including general oversight of courses and programs offered for the common benefit of all units, and;
      • shall be an engine for curricular innovation for the College and the University.

    4. Vacancy in Office

      If for any reason a Committee member is temporarily unable to perform the duties of office, their position may be filled by an eligible member of their group recommended by the Dean, confirmed by a majority vote of the Committee, and appointed by the Dean.

      Such an appointee shall serve until the Committee member they replace is able to continue in their term of office. If an elected Committee member becomes unavailable for Committee service over a prospective period of 2 years or longer, their position shall be filled at the next Committee election. Prior to assumption of office by the elected successor, the position may be filled by appointment as set forth previously in this Section.
