The College of the Environment is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our students, faculty, staff, and postdocs. The College encourages the community to submit suggestions for safety improvements and to reach out to members of the Health and Safety Committee (HSC10) regarding any safety concerns. The committee meets once a month to strategize ways to reduce workplace illnesses and injuries, and members serve as a source of health and safety information for their colleagues.

Submit safety-related suggestions

If you have a specific suggestion for how safety within the College of the Environment community can be improved, please submit your idea to the College’s Health and Safety Committee for consideration. Suggestions should:

  • Be submitted by a member of the College of the Environment community.
  • Specifically address a safety concern within the College of the Environment.

The College’s Health and Safety Committee (HSC10) meets monthly and suggestions are reviewed on a rolling basis. The HSC10 will review your suggestion and share details with relevant parties as needed. Depending on the nature and scope of the suggestion, the HSC10 may or may not endorse the suggestion for implementation, but we will attempt to respond to every suggestion within 60 days of submission if you choose to include your name and contact information.

Request funds for safety improvements – David Zuckerman Safety Fund

The College has set aside modest funding to support community-initiated safety improvements and repairs to improve the safety and functionality of our operations and facilities. This fund is named in honor of David Zuckerman, Manager of Horticulture and Plant Records for the UW Botanic Gardens and a long-time leader of the College’s Health and Safety Committee. David Zuckerman has spent more than 40 years serving the University of Washington with unparalleled excellence, intelligence, and grace and has been a stalwart advocate for the health, safety, and well-being of students, postdocs, staff, faculty, and visitors of the University of Washington Botanic Gardens, the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, and the College of the Environment.

Requests for funding should be submitted to the College’s Health and Safety Committee for consideration. Requests should:

  • Be submitted by a member of the College of the Environment community. Students, staff, postdocs, faculty, and volunteers are all eligible to apply.
  • Address a safety concern within the College of the Environment. Priority will be given to requests that have broader benefit. (e.g., A request to help purchase department-based satellite phones that could be checked out by any member of the department would be prioritized over a request to help purchase satellite phones for one research group.)
  • Funds can be used for repairs, equipment, supplies, training.
  • Not exceed $5,000.
  • Be matched by a ratio of no less than 1:1. Matching funds can be from any appropriate source. (e.g., grant, unit funds, PI RCR return)
  • Include a plan for the stewardship of the improvements, if applicable.

The College’s Health and Safety Committee (HSC10) meets monthly and requests for funding are reviewed on a rolling basis. The HSC10 will review your request and share details with relevant parties as needed. Depending on the nature and scope of the request, the HSC10 may or may not endorse your request for funding, but we will attempt to respond to every request within 60 days of submission.
