Astrobiology: A Very Short Introduction

In the late 1990s, the University of Washington created what was arguably the world’s first graduate program in astrobiology, aimed at preparing scientists to hunt for life away from Earth. In 2001, David Catling became one of the first people brought to the UW specifically to teach astrobiology. Catling, a UW professor of Earth and space sciences, is the author of Astrobiology: A Very Short Introduction, the 370th offering in the Oxford University Press series of “very short introduction” books by experts in various fields.

‘Future of Ice’ initiative marks new era for UW polar research

The Northwest has long been a hub for Alaska-bound fishing vessels and scientific study of the Arctic. The University of Washington’s new “Future of Ice” initiative seeks to build on that research in a region now undergoing rapid changes. The initiative includes several new hires, a new minor in Arctic studies and a winter lecture series. “This is partly recognizing how much is going on in polar research at the UW,” said initiative director Eric Steig, a UW professor of Earth and space sciences who studies ice cores.

Dean’s Office working toward sustainable administration practices

The staff of the College of the Environment’s dean’s office are inspired by the work in the College and across campus to understand and address the environmental challenges of our time. This past year, following sustainability efforts of many students, faculty, and staff in the college and beyond, the dean’s office worked with the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Office to identify and align our practices and policies with the goals of sustainable resource use.

Mount Rainier Institute successfully completes pilot programs

  This past October, after a year of planning and preparation, the Mount Rainier Institute successfully conducted its first two pilot programs down at Pack Forest! The idea first germinated with Professor Greg Ettl and the National Park Service several years ago. Since those early meetings, one of the driving forces behind the program has been John Hayes, environmental education program manager at Pack Forest.

Sports and sustainability: nothing in common? Think again

This quarter, Program on Environment’s Sustainability Studio students partnered with University of Washington Husky Athletics Green Team members, and with representatives from the Green Sports Alliance, UW Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Office, and UW Recycling, to assess existing practices and identify opportunities for sustainability improvements in UW sports. The teams developed and implemented four innovative projects to help ramp up Husky athletics sustainability efforts: Athlete Engagement in Locker Room Waste Diversion, Analysis of Local Food at Husky Stadium, Carbon Footprinting Offsetting of Game Day Travel, and Fan Outreach and Education via Social Media.
