New Master of Science program for science teachers now accepting applications

The College of the Environment’s newest degree program, the Master of Science in Science for Teachers (MSST) is now accepting applications for the upcoming academic year. The program is designed for practicing science teachers, who will strengthen their knowledge and gain experience by completing meaningful scientific research with renowned UW researchers. Through a combination of a customized course plan and one-on-one faculty-mentored scientific research, MSST transforms science teachers into practicing scientists who return to their classrooms with the experience of doing fundamental or applied scientific inquiry.

Hall Conservation Genetic Research Award: applications due April 16

The College of the Environment is pleased to announce the new Hall Conservation Genetic Research Award, designed specifically to support graduate students working in the field of conservation genetics. Any funded project must be completed in its entirety within the funding year, and a scholarly research product–like a manuscript submitted to peer-reviewed journal, presentation at a national or international scientific society conference–must result from the work.

Citizen scientists: UW students help state legislator with climate policy

In a twist on the concept of citizen scientist, University of Washington science students helped the state Legislature with environmental policy. During the past year and a half, four UW graduate students participated in a working group tasked with creating policies to satisfy the 2008 law requiring Washington state to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. Apply for a College of the Environment Scholarship

The College of the Environment is pleased to announce the availability of student scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year. Scholarships available include the Clarence H. Campbell Endowed Lauren Donaldson Scholarship, the Nancy Wilcox Scholarship, the Del Rio Environmental Studies Scholarship, and the Yakama Nation Endowed Fund for Student Support Scholarship. Award amounts for all scholarships will vary depending upon financial need and will be distributed over the course of the Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters the academic year.

Do Washington State students have what it takes to tackle ocean acidification?

On March 1, Washington Sea Grant and other programs and schools from the University of Washington College of the Environment hosted the 2014 Orca Bowl on the UW campus. More than 100 students from 13 Washington state high schools competed at the event, focused this year on ocean acidification. This year, Everett’s ORCA high school team took top honors, and newcomer Redmond High placed second.
