The festive vibe at the College of the Environment’s 1st Annual Spring Celebration provided a perfect backdrop in which to bid adieu to the academic school year and congratulate the College’s 2014-2015 award winners. Focused on College faculty, students, and staff, the event was an opportunity for friends and colleagues across all departments to gather and celebrate. As attendees mingled, members of the College’s Executive Committee served up ice cream sundaes.

David Battisti isn’t trying to save the world. He’s trying to understand it, he says. A professor of atmospheric sciences at the College of the Environment, he works to increase our collective knowledge on the global climate system and its natural variation. He’s interested in how the oceans, sea ice, atmosphere, and land interact and lead to variability in the climate—what we experience as weather.

In January 2015 the College of the Environment’s Marketing and Communications team sent out surveys to more than 1,000 College faculty, research staff, and graduate students to better understand their interest in and perceptions of science communication, outreach, and engagement. The goal of the survey was to identify the most effective and targeted ways we can support scientists’ outreach efforts; in particular we wanted to both evaluate current resources and pinpoint new opportunities.
