The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, based at the University of Washington, will host an online event on the 40th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens, featuring seismologists from the UW and other institutions who can explain the events before, during and after the historic blast. The virtual event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday, May 18, on the PNSN’s YouTube channel — exactly 40 years after the blast.

This Saturday will mark a half century since the Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon and two U.S. astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, walked its surface. At the University of Washington, the NASA-funded Northwest Earth and Space Sciences Pipeline, or NEESP, is marking the occasion with a robotics challenge for middle and high school students from across the state.

Families, students and children are invited to get their hands wet on Saturday with “Our Watery World,” the University of Washington’s second-annual aquatic science open house. This free and family-friendly afternoon of hands-on learning will feature tours of a research boat, a Puget Sound invertebrate tank and more May 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. in fishery sciences and oceanography buildings on campus.
