UW’s College of the Environment is pleased to announce that John Horne has been named director of the Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO) for a three-year term, effective August 1, 2018.

Horne is a professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and a fisheries biologist who uses acoustical techniques to understand spatial structures, interactions and abundances of aquatic communities, which are used to inform resource management. John has been a JISAO senior fellow since 2011 and has extensive experience collaborating with scientists at NOAA Fisheries’ Alaska Fisheries Science Center and Northwest Fisheries Science Center. In addition, he has experience within the NOAA Cooperative Institutes, having held research scientist positions at both the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory and the Alaska Fisheries Science Center.

“The JISAO community is a national role model for highly effective academic and federal collaborations. I am excited about this opportunity to work closely with John on leading and facilitating transformative research and training programs grounded in the incredible strengths of the UW and our regional and federal partners,” said Lisa J. Graumlich, dean of the College of the Environment and Mary Laird Wood professor.

The College would also like to thank outgoing JISAO director Tom Ackerman, who has been an exceptional leader for the program.

I particularly appreciate his national-level advocacy for rigorous, high-quality, well-funded science, his creativity in developing innovative partnerships for new research and mentorship opportunities, and his dedication to broadening participation in the Earth sciences at all levels,” Graumlich said.
