Daniel Schindler is an ecologist who studies the causes and consequences of dynamics in aquatic ecosystems, and how those dynamics affect the goods and services that aquatic systems provide. He is one of the core faculty with the UW Alaska Salmon Program. In western Alaska, he studies the interactions between the physical features of watersheds and the ecological processes that support wildlife and fisheries. One aspect of this work has been in quantifying how genetic diversity and environmental complexity combine to maintain healthy salmon populations in Bristol Bay. Additionally, he looks at the effects that urban development has on lakes, both in Seattle and across the Pacific Northwest more widely. Throughout his research program, fieldwork is closely coupled with statistical modeling.
