Marc L. Miller is internationally renowned for his work on marine natural resources, their use, and the search for ways that they can be sustainable developed. As a cultural anthropologist, he looks not only at how people build their lives around the coasts and oceans through direct exploitation, but also at the other ways they value them — aesthetically, ethically, even spiritually. As such, he delights in taking the work of thinkers perhaps not known for their work in sustainable development and applying their work in unorthodox ways — using the writings of French philosopher Michel Foucault to look at coastal tourism in Seattle, for example.
