Stephen Malone

Research Professor Emeritus

In 2007, Stephen Malone retired from the University of Washington and as director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. However, he continues to serve as an emeritus professor involved in research and network operations. His research interests are network seismology, earthquake hazards, Episodic Tremor and Slip (ETS) and volcano seismology. More specifically, he is interested in the technology of operating a modern, digitally recorded regional seismograph network. This system, called ShakeAlert, includes near real-time event processing and alarms which notify staff of large earthquakes or equipment failure and inform the public. Stephen is also interested in volcano seismology and studies both earthquakes related to volcanic processes and any activity on volcanoes that shake the ground such as glacier motion, rockfalls, avalanches or debris flows.
