Researchers at Washington Sea Grant help prepare coastal communities for impacts of relative sea-level rise

Washington Sea Grant, a unit in the College of the Environment, works to restore and protect marine environments through addressing important issues, providing better tools for marine management, and supporting strategic partnerships within the marine community. Coastal hazards specialist and resident geologist Ian Miller embodies this approach, and is studying changes in local sea level over time in order to help coastal communities plan for rising seas along their shores. Specifically, he’s working to find out if models and predictions have paid too little attention to how widely its effects can vary across short distances. Together with the University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group (CIG), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and Adaptation International, Miller and the Washington Sea Grant team are working to refine those predictions down to a micro-level.
