Five UW Environment students awarded Washington Sea Grant fellowships

Five graduate students from the College of the Environment have been awarded Washington Sea Grant (WSG) fellowships. Corinne Noufi, Natalie Lowell, Katie Byrnes and Katie Shelledy from the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs (SMEA), were awarded the WSG Hershman Fellowship and Alanna Greene, a recent graduate of SMEA was selected as a finalist for the Sea Grant John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship.

UW Environment announces 2021-2022 dean’s office scholarship recipients

The College of the Environment is pleased to announce the following undergraduate and graduate scholarships awarded for 2021-22. Del Rio Endowed Environmental Studies Scholarship The Del Rio Family Foundation established the Del Rio Endowed Scholarship Fund for Environmental Studies to encourage and support students with an interest in the environment who are participating in the Educational Opportunity Program. The Program promotes academic success and graduation for under-represented ethnic minority, economically disadvantaged and first-generation college students at the University of Washington.

Two UW Environment researchers honored by the American Meteorological Society

Two Atmospheric Sciences researchers were honored by the American Meteorological Society (AMS) for their contributions to the weather, water and climate research community. Shuyi Chen, professor and incoming UW Environment associate dean for research, received the Sverdrup Gold Medal. Cecilia Bitz, Atmospheric Sciences department chair and professor, received the Syukuro Manabe Climate Research Award. The AMS advances the atmospheric and related sciences, technologies, applications and services for the benefit of society.

Two students from UW Environment receive 2021 President's Medal

Congratulations to graduating seniors Elizabeth Lee (Program on the Environment) and Essac Mazengia (Environmental and Forest Sciences), both awarded the President’s Medal in the 2021 University of Washington Awards of Excellence. Each year, UW President Ana Marie Cauce presents two medals to the graduating seniors who have achieved the most distinguished academic records at the University: one medal to a student who has completed at least three-fourths of his or her degree requirements at the University of Washington, and one medal to a student who entered the University with at least 60 transfer credits from a Washington community college.

Faculty honors: Early career faculty innovator in environmental studies

National Center for Atmospheric research names Cleo Woelfle-Erskine to Early Career Faculty Innovator Program The National Center for Atmospheric Research has named Cleo Woelfle-Erskine, assistant professor in the UW School of Marine & Environmental Affairs, to its Early Career Faculty Innovator Program. The designation comes with a $400,000 award and Woelfle-Erskine is among the new program’s second cohort, working with School of Environmental and Forest Sciences doctoral student Sofi Courtney.
