Tim Essington to serve as director of the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences

The UW College of the Environment is pleased to announce that Professor Tim Essington has agreed to serve for a five-year term as director of the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, effective July 1, 2022. Essington is a fisheries ecologist, whose research focuses on the application of ecological knowledge to sustain fisheries and ecosystems. He has an active research program in Puget Sound examining consequences of climate change, hypoxia, and nearshore restoration on food webs, and he is also well known for his global syntheses of fish and fisheries data to reveal ecosystem responses to fishing.

Dean Emerita Lisa Graumlich awarded Seattle Aquarium Sylvia Earle Medal

UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences professor and College of the Environment Dean Emerita Lisa Graumlich has been awarded the 2022 Seattle Aquarium Silvia Earle Medal, which honors individuals whose leadership and lifetime accomplishments reflect and advance the mission of the Seattle Aquarium. The medal was presented as part of the aquarium’s annual Ocean Conservation Honors event. Graumlich has devoted her career to studying the causes and impacts of climate change, with a special focus on using paleoecological records such as tree-rings to understand the magnitude of human impacts.

UW Botanic Gardens selected for Central Park Conservancy Institute for Urban Parks 2022 Partnerships Lab

UW Botanic Gardens, the Arboretum Foundation, and Seattle Parks & Recreation have been selected to participate in the Central Park Conservancy’s 2022 Partnerships Lab program! The Partnerships Lab provides resources and mentorship to support urban parks through fundamental challenges and strengthen public spaces to expand environmental and community benefits. The eight-month program to teach best practices, engage in peer-to-peer mentorship and host workshops with Central Park Conservancy subject-matter experts.

UW Environment scientist named 2021 AAAS fellow

Emily Carrington, resident scientist at the UW’s Friday Harbor Laboratories, was named a AAAS Fellow, according to a Jan. 26 announcement by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is among 564 new fellows from around the world elected in 2021, who are recognized for “their scientifically and socially distinguished achievements” in science and engineering. Carrington is honored for her research contributions in biomechanics and ecophysiology, as well as efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in science.

A UW Environment expert included on Highly Cited Researchers 2021 list

UW Environment is proud to announce that School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences’ Julian Olden has been named on the annual Highly Cited Researchers 2021 list from Clarivate. The annual list identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index.
