Spotlight: Aaron Wirsing, Environmental and Forest Sciences

Front and center in Aaron Wirsing’s office is a framed and colorful drawing of killer whales chasing down dinner—seals, fish, dolphins, other frightened sea creatures.  The artist?  A 10-year-old Aaron, inspired by the nature television shows of his youth.  “Predators always fascinated me.  Nothing’s changed!,” said Wirsing. Now an assistant professor in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, he still pursues his passion for predators.

Spotlight: Bob Burns, Oceanographer and Philanthropist

Spotlight is an ongoing series that will introduce you to the many members that make up the College community.  Flipping through the channels on TV, Bob Burns, retired oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, came across a show detailing the marvels of ocean gliders that traverse the world’s oceans. Resembling a slender yellow rocket with fixed wings, this particular automaton travels from New Jersey to Spain through watery space and time, beaming scads of oceanographic information to waiting computers and scientists back on shore.

Student Spotlight: Karl Lang

Karl Lang speaks as if being a geologist was his destiny. “I’ve always been interested in geology,” says Lang, who as a child was fascinated by rocks and fossils. He went on to study Geology and Economics at the College of William and Mary in Virginia and is now a PhD student in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the UW College of the Environment.
