Two UW Environment scientists awarded Sloan Fellowships for early-career research

Two faculty members at the University of Washington have been awarded early-career fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The new Sloan Fellows, announced Feb. 12, are Kyle Armour and Jacqueline Padilla-Gamiño, both assistant professors in the College of the Environment. Open to scholars in eight scientific and technical fields — chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, molecular biology, neuroscience, ocean sciences and physics — the fellowships honor those early-career researchers whose achievements mark them among the next generation of scientific leaders.

Three College of the Environment faculty members named AAAS fellows

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has named three faculty members from the University of Washington College of the Environment as AAAS Fellows, according to a Nov. 26 announcement. They are part of a cohort of 443 new fellows for 2019, all chosen by their peers for “scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.” The three College of the Environment faculty members who have been named as fellows are: Julia Parrish, professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and the Department of Biology, is elected for her work in marine ecology.

Terryl Ross recipient of UW Multicultural Alumni Partnership's Distinguished Alumni Award

Terryl Ross, assistant dean of diversity, equity and inclusion at the College of the Environment was awarded the University of Washington Multicultural Alumni Partnership (MAP) Distinguished Alumni Award on Sat., Oct. 19 at the 25th annual UW Alumni Association MAP Bridging the Gap Breakfast. MAP has worked to connect the region’s diverse communities, promote equity at the UW and celebrate the achievements of distinguished alumni and accomplished students.

Maria Blancas wins $100,000 Bullitt prize

The Bullitt Foundation announced School of Environmental and Forest Sciences PhD student Maria Blancas as the winner of the 13th annual Bullitt Environmental Prize, which recognizes young people from varied backgrounds who have overcome adversity and demonstrated the ability to become powerful environmental leaders. The goal of the program is to help broaden and diversify the leadership of the global environmental movement.

Abigail Swann included in Science News 10: Scientists to watch

The University of Washington Department of Atmospheric Sciences‘ Abigail Swann was honored in the SN 10, Science News’ list of 10 early- and mid-career scientists on their way to greater widespread acclaim. Each scientist on the list was nominated by a Nobel laureate, recently elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, or a scientist previously named to the list. All are age 40 or under, and were selected by Science News staff for their potential to shape the science of the future.
