Join us for ice cream sundaes as we bid farewell to the 2015-2016 academic year and honor this year’s College award winners! UW Environment’s Second Annual Spring Celebration will be held at the Fishery Sciences Building at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. This event is for friends and colleagues across all departments and an opportunity to recognize a few of our incredible faculty, students, and staff.
After the College’s Executive Committee serves up ice cream and attendees mingle, Dean Lisa Graumlich will introduce each awardee and recognize their achievements. Chosen through a College-wide nomination process, each awardee was recognized by their colleagues for making a unique, inspiring, and meaningful contribution to our community during the academic year.
Distinguished Staff Member – Kathryn Stout, Aquatic and Fishery Sciences
From Kathryn’s nominators: “The College of the Environment was founded in part to help our individual units more closely collaborate—and benefit from—each other. This goal is achieved—in no small part—by the willingness of individuals to reach out and support units outside of their home department or school. Kathryn is one of the finest examples of this attitude in our staff.”
Exceptional Mentoring of Undergraduate Students – Chang Dou, Environmental and Forest Sciences
From Chang’s nominators: “I could have not asked for a more supportive, passionate, and visionary [mentor.] Chang’s gift to inspire others is clear when you interact with him.”
Outstanding Teaching Faculty – Lorenz Hauser, Aquatic and Fishery Sciences
From Lorenz’s nominators: “Simply put, Lorenz is very skilled at motivating students to think ‘big picture.'”
Outstanding Researcher – Joshua Lawler, Environmental and Forest Sciences
From Joshua’s nominators: “Just has over 130 publications relating to landscape ecology and conservation, from modeling population dynamics and species distribution shifts in response to climate change, to developing tools for conservation planning.”
Outstanding Community Impact (Student) – Isabel Carrera Zamanillo, Environmental and Forest Sciences
From Isabel’s nominators: “Isabel is part of the glue that makes a premier research university like the UW—and its innovative teaching approaches—work to support—and enhance—the activities of all students.”
Outstanding Community Impact (Faculty or Staff) – Tom Leschine, Marine and Environmental Affairs
From Tom’s nominators: “An expert in risk assessment, management, and response, Tom’s distinguished record includes service at the international, national, and regional levels—and here at the UW.”
Graduate Dean’s Medalist – Bradley Markle, Earth and Space Sciences
From Bradley’s nominators: “Bradley Markle is one of the most impressive young scientists in his field, in his scholarship, his leadership, and his education contributions.”
Undergraduate Dean’s Medalist – Nirupam Nigam, Aquatic and Fishery Sciences
From Nirupam’s nominators: “His grades are only a hint at how bright he is and give no indication whatsoever as to how creative he is as a young scientist, how much potential he has for future growth, and how fundamentally good he is as a human being.”
Outstanding Diversity Commitment Award – Robert Winglee, Earth and Space Sciences
From Robert’s nominators: “Through his efforts, he has personally touched the lives of many underrepresented and underprivileged students, and facilitated their retention in STEM disciplines.”
Congratulations again to all of the 2015-2016 award winners! Nominations for the 2016-2017 College awards will open again in early 2017—stay tuned for that announcement.
