New Faculty Intro: Beth Gardner

Earlier this March, we welcomed Beth as an assistant professor from the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at N.C. State University. She is one of two recent additions to our wildlife faculty, and she brings enormous experience in quantitative ecology. Read more about her background and interests, from her first foray into building models as an undergrad at Allegheny College (hydroponics and fish growth), to the research she’ll be pursuing in her Quantitative Ecology Lab at SEFS!

SEFS Grad Students Contribute to Art Exhibition

Several of our graduate students—including Sean Callahan, Sean Jeronimo, Caitlin Littlefield, Korena Mafune, Allison Rossman and Jorge Tomasevic—provided “tree truths” as part of Cheryl Richey’s Arbor Intelligence solo show, which is now open at the UW Tower and will run through September.

Save the Date: Annual Salmon BBQ, Oct. 5!

We’ve set the date for this year’s salmon feast for Wednesday, October 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Anderson Hall courtyard. We’ll have more details to share later this summer, but you can count on the usual enticements: heaps and heaps of delicious salmon, plenty of beer and wine, and tons of good cheer as we kick off the quarter!

ANNOUNCEMENTS & KUDOS

Don’t forget that Captain Fantastic, a new movie starring Viggo Mortensen that is partly set in the old-growth woods of Pack Forest, opens at theaters in Seattle this Friday, June 15! As part of a fun promotion for the film, as well, we’ve been giving away free tickets to an advance screening of the movie this Wednesday, July 13, at 7 p.m. at Pacific Place in downtown Seattle. A few spots have opened up, so send Karl a quick note to see if there’s still space!

Attention, denizens of Anderson Hall: From this Wednesday, July 13, through Tuesday, July 26, a middle school girls science camp will be using Anderson 22 during normal business hours (and, at times, the Anderson courtyard). The camp will run again from August 3 to 22. It is not a large group, and we do not anticipate any unusual noise or disruption to staff in Anderson Hall. But if you do experience any disturbances, please let us know right away, and we will make sure the camp operates as quietly as possible.

Also, we hope you get a chance to try the new Brockman Tree Tour App, which you can download for free anytime. This initial version is designed for Android phones, and we’d love to know what you think!

PUBLICATIONS

SEFS doctoral student Shannon Kachel coauthored a chapter on the state-of-the-art science of camera trapping in a new book, Snow Leopards, which came out in June. It’s part of a series, Biodiversity of the World: Conservation from Genes to Landscapes.

Professor Laura Prugh was a co-author on a new paper in Human Dimensions of Wildlife, “Motivations of Fur Trappers in Interior Alaska.”

SEFS IN THE PRESS

On Wednesday, July 6, Professor Sally Brown published a great blog piece in The Huffington Post, “Well Preserved-The Problem with Landfills.”

Also, on Tuesday, July 5, the campus-wide UW Today email included a prominent announcement for the opening of Cheryl Richey’s Arbor Intelligence art exhibition at the UW Tower.
