Kudos to Maria Sandercock, Miku Lenentine, Ellen Weir and the rest of the planning team for the terrific 2013 Graduate Student Symposium! The winner for the best presentation was Jason Scullion for his talk, Opportunities and barriers to conservation in frontier environments: Lessons from Madre de Dios, Peru; and the winner for the best poster was Brooke Cassel, Fire History of the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve in Western Mexico.
Big kudos, as well, to SEFS students Christina Restaino, Camila Haristoy, Hillary Burgess and Erik Budsberg for volunteering their time for the Bryant Elementary Science Fair Mentor program during a nine-week period. UW mentors provide their expertise in the scientific process and serve as inspiring role models for their students. Nicely done!
Dean Emeritus Bruce Bare was appointed to the national Society of American Foresters’ Educational Policy Review Committee for a two-year term starting January 1, 2013. Also, the Washington State Society of American Foresters will hold its annual meeting on April 3-5 in Chelan, Wash.

Professor Sándor Tóth recently contributed to two publications: “A Voronoi Tesselation-based Approach to Generate Hypothetical Forest Landscapes,” in the Canadian Journal of Forest Research; and “Spatially-Explicit Forest Harvest Scheduling with Difference Equations,” featured in the Annals of Operations Research.
With a grant from the EPA, Professor Susan Bolton is leading a group of researchers and students at SEFS on a project experimenting with ways to capture fog and wring out its moisture for irrigation and other uses in Peru. It's cool stuff, and The Seattle Times featured the project on the front page of its Saturday edition on March 16: “UW project seeks to harvest fog for irrigation.”
Dan Schwartz, who earned a Masters of Environmental Horticulture from the School of Forest Resources in 2011, recently joined the biosolids division for Seattle’s King County as a Water Quality Planner/Project Manager I. His faculty advisor was Professor Sally Brown, and Professors Kern Ewing and Darlene Zabowski also served on his committee.
