Penny Dalton is an affiliate associate professor in the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs and the director of Washington Sea Grant. The Sea Grant program--part of the College of the Environment and administered through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)--is a mission-driven organization focused on research, education and outreach by "identifying and addressing important marine issues, providing better tools for management of the marine environment and use of its resources, and initiating and supporting strategic partnerships within the marine community." Penny has a long history of applying science to developing practical solutions for utilizing natural resources. Prior to taking the helm of Washington Sea Grant, she served as vice president of the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education, assistant administrator for fisheries at NOAA, and as lead committee staff on Capitol Hill that crafted and shepherded critical environmental legislation into law.
