Oceanography

Kathie Kelly is an oceanographer who observes the ocean from the unique vantage point of space. She uses vast amounts of data from satellites to understand how the ocean influences the Earth’s climate. She was an early advocate of this approach and her research explores the complex interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere, specifically in the Atlantic Ocean. There, she looks at how changes in the transport and storage of heat by the ocean affect heat exchange with the atmosphere, especially around the world’s major currents. Such an understanding is crucial both for understanding the climate variations, and also predicting climate change.
