Heidi Houston is a geologist who studies the physics of deep earthquakes. Working in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, she is part of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, an organization dedicated to reducing the impacts of earthquakes and volcanoes in Oregon and Washington. She also focuses some of her time and research on the San Andreas Fault in California. Part of her research centers on describing the behavior of so-called slow-slip tremors, as this recently discovered type of quake sheds new light both on how tectonic plates behave, and also the possibility of predicting larger earthquakes in the western U.S. and beyond.
