Racially diverse and economically disadvantaged communities are often living near environmental hazards, leading to poor health and a diminished quality of life. As the realities of the 21st century continue to emerge, people throughout America are mobilizing in the names of environmental justice, healing and community empowerment. This summit was an introductory conversation about how UW stakeholders can improve our environmental justice connections with diverse communities, by reflecting on:

  • What’s working and what’s not?
  • How can we be valued and respected champions in the environmental justice aspect of the UW Earth Day 2020 celebration—the 50th anniversary?

This summit featured some brief comments from:

  • Joe Casola [Climate Impacts Group]
  • Ben Packard [EarthLab]
  • Melissa Watkinson [Washington Sea Grant]
  • Claudia Frere-Anderson [UW Sustainability]
  • Sky Stahl [UW Earth Day]
