Congrats to the UW class of 2018!

It is graduation season, and with that comes well wishes for our graduates and an opportunity to shine a light on their accomplishments. In appreciation of their contributions to enriching the College of the Environment in numerous ways, the College has decided to fund a project jointly with the Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF). Recognizing our students are the next generation of leaders in environmental science and decision-making, we believe this is a contribution that showcases our collective commitment to the sustainability and the well-being of our Husky Community and our planet.

Based on the recommendation of our Student Advisory Council and a vote by our graduating students, the College will help fund a project to Pair UW food Waste With Area Non-Profits in Need through a student-designed open source website and app. The app will facilitate the logistics and transportation of food waste from UW Food Services to local nonprofits, diverting left-over food that would have been composted to communities in need. The project will raise awareness and educate the UW community about food waste and recovery, give individual agencies information to act when they are in need, and serve as a model that could be implemented outside the community. This project has begun piloting with Local Point, student deliverers, and area shelters. The project leaders hope to empower the team of students to see themselves as experienced food recovery ambassadors who will further sustainable practices in future education, jobs, and communities,  exemplifying the motto, “each one, teach one.”
