Funds available to support Cross Campus Collaborations - In order to encourage and foster new collaborations on topics of mutual interest or strengthen existing ties, approximately $100,000 is jointly available from the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and College of Environment to support planning efforts and/or pilot projects needed to develop new collaborative research proposals. The deadline for applications is Friday, December 4, 2009. More information (PDF, 18KB) »
Continuing Reorganization Procedures - On November 2, 2009, the Senate Committee on Planning and Budgeting reviewed a proposal to move the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and the School of Oceanography into the College of the Environment at the beginning of the 2009-10 spring quarter. Under the Procedures for Limited Reorganization and Consolidation of Programs, Section 26-41.C. of the Faculty Code the faculties of these Schools have until December 8, 2009, to petition the Provost for a full review of the reorganization proposal. If no petition is received by the Provost by the deadline, the reorganization process will proceed as planned.
Dean Search - An Advisory Search Committee on the Deanship of the College of the Environment was appointed by the Provost on October 16, 2009. Information regarding this search can be found in the Office of the Provost.
Group 10 Health and Safety Committee - Nominations for the College of the Environment's Health and Safety Committee are underway. Please participate in your unit's nomination and election processes. See the UW's Environmental and Safety election guidelines (PDF, 63KB) for more information.
Funding
I'm pleased to announce that the CoEnv Dean’s Office received this week a gift of $2 million to fund an endowed chair in conservation. We are working with the donor to craft a fuller announcement, and expect to be able to share more in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for details.
I am also pleased to announce that the federal EPA appropriation for the Puget Sound Partnership included the following language "From within the funds provided, $4,000,000 is included for the Puget Sound Ecosystem Research Initiative at the University of Washington's College of the Environment. These funds are to conduct, coordinate, and disseminate scientific research to inform policy decisions necessary to carry out the Puget Sound Action Agenda." The initiative is a joint activity between the College of the Environment and UWT/Center for Urban Waters. We will be working over the next several weeks/months to ensure that we have effective oversight and broad participation and will keep you posted on major developments.
